Many of us, I’m sure, will have been greatly inspired and uplifted by the determined and focussed efforts of our Olympians and Paralympians during London 2012, and now the Commonwealth Games have begun in Glasgow. Even people who wouldn’t describe themselves as ardent sports fans were moved to tears, as they witnessed individuals and teams demonstrating huge measures of skill, strength, courage and discipline in their pursuit of a gold medal.
We know, of course, that the Games themselves are only a very small part of the story. Yes the medallists’ success is certainly down to them getting it right on the day and performing to the very best of their ability when it really counts. But their winning runs, swims, throws, matches, lifts, dives, rides and bouts are the culmination of years of arduous training, disciplined dieting and meticulous planning.
