Basis of Belief (before Feb 2021)

Our current Basis of Belief can be found here. The old seven-point Basis below is included below for comparison.

1.    Our teaching and support work seeks to be in accordance with biblical teaching.

2.    Our understanding of the Bible’s teaching is that God’s design was the creation of two distinct and complementary sexes, male and female (Genesis 1:27) and that any sexual relationship outside of marriage between a man and a woman falls short of God’s plan for His creation (the “one-flesh” relationship, Genesis 2:24).

3.    We are aware that many Christians are sexually attracted to members of the same sex and that others experience gender dysphoria, but are often afraid to admit it to themselves or other Christians. In particular, they fear rejection and condemnation.

4.    We believe that one consequence of the Fall is brokenness in all areas of our lives, including our experience of gender identity, sexual attractions and relationships with people. The wounds arising from this inherent brokenness require God’s transforming touch - whatever our sexual attractions may be.

5.    We believe the Christian good news is that ongoing transformation in all areas of our lives is possible through the work of the Holy Spirit within. Pastoral care and wise biblical counselling are tools that God uses in this process. Growth towards wholeness may involve a change in emotions, sexual feelings and gender identity, although we do not see it as our aim to “cure” same-sex attractions or gender dysphoria and do not practice any form of so-called ‘reparative therapy’

6.    We do not believe a sexual relationship is essential for a meaningful and fulfilled life. We therefore seek to foster positive attitudes to singleness in the church.

7.    We accept that some people hold to alternative viewpoints concerning same-sex practice and gender identity. Although we don’t consider this to be an area where Christians can simply agree to disagree, we acknowledge the right of individuals to choose how they live their lives before God.
