TFT parents group

I first came across TFT about 7 years ago when my daughter opened up to me about her struggles with SSA. At the time she was passionate about her faith and committed to the biblical view of sexuality. I went along with her to the TFT London and National Conferences, I honestly didn’t think I had much to worry about, as she was so zealous for the Lord. I naively believed she would never walk away from her faith. It was only a year previously that I had come to faith myself through my daughter’s encouragement to attend her church and home groups. Hearing the Gospel, being intrigued by Christian community and God revealing himself to me in a profound way - I was all in. Of course, this was all part of God’s plan and an answer to prayer.

only God is the perfect parent, but we can leadn on Jesus in our weakness

About 5 years ago, there was a real turning point when my daughter revealed that she was leaving her church, her faith and everything she had once believed. She had started a relationship with a woman. I was heartbroken and confused and, although my church was supportive, I didn’t know anybody going through anything similar.
I reconnected with TFT and was put in touch with Heather. She listened with care and compassion and without judgement and was willing to share her own story, which made me feel less alone. I was also reminded that even in the hurt and the unknown, Jesus is with us and is faithful. Being reminded that God loves our children more than we do is so comforting; we really can rest in Him and put our trust in Him. Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son reminded me of God’s love for His children. He is there with open arms ready to embrace them and the invitation to return is always there no matter what the mess.

Today I’m still part of the TFT parent’s group. We connect mainly through WhatsApp and have bi monthly Zoom meetings. The group has adapted, as the seasons have changed in people’s lives.  We are currently reading Paul David Tripp’s book “14 Gospel Principles of Parenting”. I was a bit dubious at first that this book would be suitable for group discussion, as I no longer parent small children. However, it’s been very powerful in learning about parenting as an ambassador for Christ, not as an owner of our children. I’ve come to understand that only God is the perfect parent, but we can lean on Jesus in our weakness.  We will hopefully benefit from using other resources in future to increase our knowledge and help in Godlike responses to our children.

If you’re a parent going through similar issues, please know that you’re not alone. We are here as a ministry and as a TFT Barnabas support Group to offer a safe, grace filled space. We’ve all fallen short, but Jesus is present to meet us in our mess with love, truth and overflowing mercy.
